Jeongeup-si Successfully Concludes Hwangtohyeon Donghak Peasant Revolution Commemoration Ceremony

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] Jeongeup City, Jeonbuk Province announced that the ‘55th Hwangtohyeon Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Ceremony’ was held over two days on the 7th and 8th at the Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Park.

Held under the theme ‘The Sky Then, Us Now,’ this memorial ceremony was hosted by Jeongeup City and organized by the Donghak Peasant Revolution Succession Project Association.

The ceremony was prepared to reexamine the historical value and significance of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, which was a nationwide resistance to protect national sovereignty from Japanese imperialist invasion and to create an equal world where people live with dignity, and to inherit its noble spirit.

The event was attended by Mayor Yoo Jin-seop, National Assembly member Yoon Joon-byung, Kim Bong-seung, chairman of the Donghak Peasant Revolution Succession Project Association, provincial and city council members, the Donghak Peasant Revolution bereaved families association, and citizens, who all reflected on the noble spirit of the Donghak Peasant Revolution.

In particular, with the memorial ceremony held at the newly opened Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Park commemorating the victory day at Hwangtohyeon, it provided an opportunity to reaffirm the status of Jeongeup as the birthplace and sacred site of the Donghak Peasant Revolution.

Also, since this year’s ceremony was the first held after the lifting of social distancing measures due to COVID-19, it gained more significance as many citizens and spring visitors attended.

The ceremony officially began with a pre-performance called ‘Daedong Gilnori,’ followed by readings of the Hwangtohyeon proclamation by Mayor Yoo Jin-seop, the Donghak Peasant Revolution Succession Project Association, and National Assembly member Yoon Joon-byung.

Next, the 12th Donghak Peasant Revolution Grand Prize was awarded to Jeon Seong-jun, a visiting professor at Kookmin University and great-grandson (through both sides) of General Jeon Bong-jun.

Professor Jeon Seong-jun said, “As a descendant of General Jeon Bong-jun, I will continue to inherit the spirit of the Donghak Peasant Revolution and do my best to overcome discrimination and conflict and create a stage for great harmony.”

The congratulatory performances began with folk singer ‘Urinara’ and trot prodigy Hong Jam-eon’s passionate singing, soothing the minds and bodies of the audience tired from COVID-19 and receiving great response.

Popular singers ‘Min Kyung-hoon’ and ‘Ailee’ then showcased their unique sensibilities and explosive vocal power, bringing the ceremony to a grand finale.

A city official said, “Since the event was held at the Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Park completed by the wishes of Jeongeup citizens, it has even greater meaning,” adding, “We will further promote the memorial park widely to develop it into a famous destination visited by the entire nation.”
