[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] Former Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung will officially announce his candidacy for the National Assembly by-election in front of Gyeyang Mountain in Gyeyang-gu, Incheon on the 8th.
On the 7th, Lee’s side announced through a notice, "Former Governor Lee plans to hold a press conference at 11 a.m. on the 8th at the outdoor performance hall of Gyeyang Mountain to declare his candidacy for Incheon Gyeyang-eul."
The day before, the Democratic Party leadership decided to strategically nominate Lee for the Incheon Gyeyang-eul constituency among the seven National Assembly by-elections held together with the June 1 local elections.
Incheon Gyeyang-eul is the area where Song Young-gil, the Seoul mayoral candidate, served five terms and is traditionally one of the strongholds of Democratic Party support.
On the day, Lee posted on Facebook, "I will fully abide by all party decisions. I trust the collective intelligence of the people and will fully immerse myself in the sea of public sentiment," accepting the leadership’s strategic nomination decision.
Lee added, "I deeply acknowledge that the Democratic Party’s situation and the difficulties in the local elections are also my responsibility following the presidential election defeat, and overcoming this is entirely my responsibility. For a better future for the people, I will do my utmost together with the Democratic Party candidates who are running in this challenging election to surely win."
