[Jangseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jo Hangyu] Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do is accelerating efforts to become a central hub for the scholar culture historical theme tourism of the UNESCO World Heritage site, Pilam Seowon.
The county announced on the 6th that it held the "Final Report Meeting on the Basic and Detailed Implementation Plan for the World Heritage Pilam Seowon Scholar Culture Promotion Project" on the 3rd at the second-floor situation room of the county office.
Pilam Seowon in Jangseong, where the Neo-Confucian scholar Haseo Kim Inhu is enshrined, is an important cultural asset that allows research on the social and economic conditions and the lifestyle of scholars during the Joseon Dynasty, and it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in July 2019.
Earlier, the county succeeded in securing a project budget of 10 billion KRW over three years, including county funds, when the Pilam Seowon Scholar Culture Globalization Promotion Project was selected in the "2021 Jeonnam-type Regional Growth Strategic Project" contest hosted by Jeollanam-do last year.
Through this, the county plans to carry forward the tradition of "Munbulyeo Jangseong (文不如長城)"?originating from Heungseon Daewongun's record that "scholarship cannot match Jangseong"?and promote excellent scholar culture worldwide in phased projects.
First, the existing Pilam Seowon relic exhibition hall will be transformed into a digital exhibition space. A virtual scholar culture platform will be established so that various visitors, including foreigners, can visit the exhibition both online and offline.
A digital archive (record storage) will also be built to allow access to the recorded heritage and humanities research results related to Haseo Kim Inhu.
Jipseonggwan, which has been used only for educational purposes, will be remodeled into a complex cultural space to be utilized diversely for experiences, performances, and regional income generation.
The traditional garden located in front of Pilam Seowon and the surrounding green areas will be harmoniously arranged with the cultural assets so that visitors can enjoy rest and contemplation.
Additionally, various programs linked to Jeonnam’s scholar culture, history, and tourism content will be developed and operated.
A county official said, "Based on the results of this project, we will recreate the global value of Pilam Seowon," and added, "We will solidify the project implementation to lead Jeonnam scholar culture tourism."
