[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The government expressed its "welcome" on the 6th regarding the approval of Philip Goldberg's nomination as the U.S. Ambassador to Korea by the U.S. Senate.

An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on the same day, "We plan to actively support Ambassador-designate Goldberg to smoothly assume his post and actively contribute to strengthening the Korea-U.S. alliance."

The U.S. Senate held a plenary session on the 5th (local time) and unanimously approved Goldberg's nomination. Ambassador Goldberg is expected to assume his post in Korea soon after being officially appointed by President Joe Biden.

This fills the vacancy of the U.S. Ambassador to Korea that had lasted for 16 months. Goldberg, a career diplomat holding the title of ambassador, is a seasoned diplomat who served as the State Department's Coordinator for Implementation of U.N. Sanctions on North Korea during the Barack Obama administration. He is classified as a hardliner on North Korea and is known as a 'sanctions expert.'
