[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] LG Uplus announced on the 6th that it conducted a ‘Carbon Neutrality Challenge’ for all employees. The intention is to show that not only companies but also individuals can easily practice carbon neutrality.
The Carbon Neutrality Challenge involves performing one activity that can reduce carbon emissions in daily life and certifying it through the ‘Climate Action 1.5℃’ app. Climate Action 1.5℃ is an app created by the Korea Climate and Environment Network under the Ministry of Environment, providing 10 carbon neutrality practices that participants can easily follow, such as ‘using reusable cups’ and ‘removing PET bottle labels.’
The challenge, which started on the 21st of last month, recruited the first 100 teams within a week. About 1,100 employees participated in the challenge, completing approximately 2,100 attempts cumulatively.
The challenge with the highest participation rate was ‘using reusable cups instead of disposable cups,’ accounting for about 30% of completed attempts. This was followed by ‘removing plastic labels when disposing of PET bottles’ (about 15%) and ‘using stairs instead of elevators when moving’ (about 14%).
LG Uplus also gives gifts to teams with high participation rates. Teams where more than 80% of members participated in the challenge receive a ‘Zero Waste Kit’ consisting of a recycled toothbrush, pouch, and solid toothpaste. LG Uplus stated that the selection was made to instill the awareness that using recyclable products, even if inconvenient, is important.
Going forward, LG Uplus plans to conduct challenges that individuals can participate in, such as ‘Environmental Quizzes,’ along with team-based challenges. In addition, environmental volunteer activities previously conducted, such as ‘making EM (Effective Micro-organisms) soil balls,’ ‘installing frog ladders,’ and ‘transplanting acorn seedlings,’ will continue steadily.
