[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dobong-gu (Mayor Lee Dong-jin) established a large-scale 35m musical fountain in May 2022 next to Ui Bridge on Ui Stream in Ssangmun-dong.

This was done to create an attraction in this area, which serves as the boundary between Dobong and Gangbuk and is loved by local residents as a walking trail, to revitalize the local economy.

The musical fountain operates twice daily at noon and 8 p.m., with water jets choreographed to 10 different songs including BTS’s “Butter” and “Merry-Go-Round of Life” (Howl’s Moving Castle OST). Especially during the evening operation, a laser show is also presented, adding to the viewing enjoyment.

The musical fountain is operated by an unmanned control system to allow flexible operation depending on the season and weather. In front of the fountain, seating is provided for visitors to rest while the fountain is in operation.

The district plans to further diversify the music and fountain performances and continue maintaining the walking trail environment to make Ui Stream a pleasant place to walk.

Lee Dong-jin, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “Residents’ reactions have been very positive, stopping on their way to watch the musical fountain. As daily life gradually recovers from COVID-19, more people are visiting Ui Stream for exercise and walks, and I hope families enjoy happy times watching the musical fountain together.”

Gangdong-gu has completed the creation of the nighttime scenic specialized street “Genae Byeolgil” by installing design lighting on the side streets densely packed with shops in Sangil-dong.

The area around Sangil Girls’ High School Road in Sangil-dong is a street densely populated with stores, where residents and merchants have high expectations for revitalizing the commercial district. Accordingly, the district promoted the specialized street project to create a nighttime attraction in this area and increase visitors.

The newly created Sangil-dong specialized street was planned as “Genae Byeolgil,” inspired by the old local name “Genae Village.” “Genae Byeolgil” is designed to give the feeling of walking above the Milky Way in the night sky.

A district official said, “We expect nighttime visitors to increase with the unique specialized design lighting in the previously dark and gloomy streets,” adding, “The lighting has also greatly improved nighttime pedestrian safety.”

Meanwhile, the district is creating specialized streets throughout the area to revitalize commercial districts that have been depressed due to COVID-19. In addition to nighttime scenic specialized streets such as “Seongan Byeolgil,” which stretches from Gangpul Cartoon Street to Jjukkumi Alley, and “Jinwhang Road Nightscape Lighting” between Gildong Station and Gangdong Station, various themed streets like “Bicycle Theme Street” and “Gangdong Sports Street” are also being continuously developed.

Im Seong-hyeok, Director of Urban Landscape, said, “We sincerely thank the merchants’ association and residents who actively cooperated in the creation of the ‘Genae Byeolgil’ project,” and added, “We hope many residents visit ‘Genae Byeolgil,’ which is emerging as a new landmark in Sangil-dong.”
