Candidate Choi Dong-min Secures First Place in Party Primary with 41% of Votes

Choi Dong-min, Former Cheong Wa Dae Administrative Officer, Confirmed as Democratic Party Candidate for Dongdaemun District Mayor


[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Choi Dong-min, former Blue House administrative officer, has been selected as the Democratic Party of Korea candidate for Dongdaemun District Mayor in the June 1 local elections.


The Democratic Party of Korea Seoul Metropolitan Party announced that after combining votes from party members (50%) and ARS opinion polls (50%) over two days on the 1st and 2nd, Choi Dong-min ranked first in the primary.


Former administrative officer Choi competed in a four-person primary against Kim In-ho, Chairman of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, Yoon Jong-il, former Director of Dongdaemun Cultural Center, and Ji Yong-ho, former Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister, securing first place with 41.04% of the vote, confirming his candidacy for Dongdaemun District Mayor for the Democratic Party of Korea.


After being confirmed as the candidate, Choi said, "I will do my best to help Dongdaemun grow into a hub of transportation, economy, and culture," and added, "I will unite with the three other candidates who participated in a wonderful primary and work as one team to win the general election."


On March 21, when he declared his candidacy for Dongdaemun District Mayor, Choi Dong-min pledged to "open a new era of Dongdaemun." His platform includes ▲establishing Cheongnyangni as a transportation, commercial, and cultural hub ▲completing the Hongneung bio-cluster and international Korean medicine city ▲promoting rapid and safe reconstruction and redevelopment ▲creating village-level 10-minute cultural and sports stations ▲and fostering an educational city where children are happy, presenting a vision for the development of Dongdaemun District.


Confirmed as the candidate, former administrative officer Choi Dong-min applied for candidacy registration from May 12 to 13 and will face People Power Party candidate Lee Pil-hyung in the June 1 local elections.


Candidate Choi previously served as a director at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport during the Roh Moo-hyun administration, senior secretary to the Democratic Party leader, political secretary to the Seoul mayor, administrative officer at the Blue House Job Office under the Moon Jae-in government, and deputy spokesperson for presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung.
