Global Vehicle Sales Decrease by 2.7% Due to Semiconductor Supply Shortage
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Hyundai Motor Company ranked first in global hydrogen electric vehicle sales in the first quarter.
According to energy market research firm SNE Research on the 3rd, the global sales volume of hydrogen electric vehicles from January to March was 3,939 units, a 2.7% decrease compared to the same period last year.
External factors such as the shortage of automotive semiconductors, rising raw material prices, and Russia's invasion of Ukraine affected the decline in sales volume. As a result, sales of Hyundai Motor's Nexo and Japan's Toyota Mirai, which have led the global market, both underperformed.
Hyundai Motor sold 1,710 units of the 2021 model year Nexo, a 5.4% decrease compared to the previous year. Its market share was 43.4%. It maintained first place, surpassing Toyota (33.9%) and Honda (3.9%).
Toyota sold only 1,337 units, a 31.8% decrease compared to the previous year, as sales of the second-generation new model of the Toyota Mirai, which led market growth in the first quarter last year, sharply declined. On the other hand, Honda sold 154 hydrogen vehicles, a 65.6% increase compared to the first quarter of last year.
SNE Research analyzed, "Despite adverse conditions, Hyundai Motor limited the sales decline to single digits, but Toyota was more severely affected in supply due to overlapping supply chain issues and natural disasters."
