[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seok-jin, Legal Affairs Specialist] Ahead of the Cabinet meeting to deliberate the 'Complete Removal of Prosecutorial Investigation Rights' (검수완박) bill, an appeal letter from over 3,300 members of the prosecution was delivered to President Moon Jae-in on the 3rd.
On this day, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office stated, "This morning, Kwon Sang-dae, Director of Policy Planning at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, delivered the appeal letter sent by approximately 3,376 prosecution members to the Presidential Secretariat through the Government Joint Civil Petition Center."
The Supreme Prosecutors' Office added, "This appeal letter was voluntarily written by prosecution members nationwide, regardless of rank or job category," and "It contains a request for the President to reconsider the promises and commitments he made to the people and himself five years ago upon his inauguration, ahead of the Cabinet meeting."
In the appeal letter he personally wrote, Director Kwon said, "Ahead of the Cabinet meeting to deliberate the 검수완박 bill today, I would like to make a final appeal to the President as a member of the public," and "Even after five years, I still remember your inauguration speech. You promised the entire nation a world without privileges and unfair advantages, a world where doing things by common sense benefits everyone."
He emphasized, "No matter how it is explained, you cannot say that the resignation of Democratic Party members, the appointment of independent members, the expression of conscience by independents, and the appointment following the defection of Democratic Party members are common sense occurrences in the National Assembly," and "You cannot say that allowing lawmakers to avoid prosecution, granting impunity for abuse of power by high-ranking officials, and blocking even legitimate public interest whistleblowing are not privileges and unfair advantages for lawmakers and high-ranking officials."
Finally, Director Kwon concluded, "I understand that the inauguration speech is a promise to the people and at the same time the purest promise and commitment to oneself who must bear the heavy burden of the presidency for five years," and "I sincerely hope you will be remembered as a President who stood proudly before that pure promise and commitment."
Earlier, on the 18th of last month, Director Kwon posted a message titled 'Request to Draft an Appeal Letter to the President and the Speaker of the National Assembly' on the prosecution’s internal network to collect appeal letters from prosecution members, and recently delivered the appeal letter from over 3,000 prosecution members to National Assembly Speaker Park Byeong-seok via public email.
