[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] Samsung Medical Center is ending the operation of the Dongho Living Treatment Center in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, the first and largest base living treatment center in Korea. Samsung Medical Center plans to focus on treating severe and high-difficulty patients and to strengthen COVID-19 prevention during routine medical activities.

Samsung Medical Center announced on the 3rd that it will conclude the dispatch work at the Dongho Living Treatment Center, which has been operated as a base living treatment center with 300 rooms since October 5 last year. This is 211 days after dispatching medical staff at the request of the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Since the base living treatment center mainly admitted high-risk COVID-19 groups, CCTV was installed in every room, and 24-hour management of residents was meticulously maintained. During this period, Samsung Medical Center stationed at least 3 doctors including one professor, 15 nurses, 2 radiologists, and 2 administrative staff daily for patient management. A total of 261 medical personnel were deployed.

2,902 patients passed through this center, and 410 patients whose conditions were monitored were linked to medical institutions for continued treatment. It is especially recognized for contributing to the establishment of operational process standards for base living treatment centers.

Samsung Medical Center has actively cooperated with national quarantine efforts. In March 2020, when Samsung provided the Samsung Human Resources Development Institute Yeongdeok Training Center as a living treatment center for mild patients, Samsung Medical Center dispatched medical staff to operate it, and also sent a medical support team to the then urgent Daegu Dongsan Medical Center.

In August of the same year, medical staff were dispatched when the Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Global Campus in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, and the Samsung C&T International Business Institute in Goyang were operated as living treatment centers. In October 2020, it took the lead in advancing COVID-19 prevention by installing the first speed gate in the domestic medical field, and in December, it was the first private hospital to comply with the administrative order to expand treatment beds.

Park Seung-woo, director of Samsung Medical Center, said, “Thanks to the wholehearted support from both Samsung Medical Center and the Seoul Metropolitan Government, including the on-site medical staff for seven months, we were able to successfully conclude the operation of the living treatment center.” He added, “Samsung Medical Center, founded with the philosophy of ‘contributing to the improvement of public health,’ will use this valuable experience to continue to make every effort to overcome new infectious diseases in hospitals and quarantine sites, contributing to the healthy and happy lives of humanity.”
