World No. 2 Jon Rahm (Spain) has ignited the ‘No. 1 chase’. In the weekly official golf world rankings announced on the afternoon of the 2nd (Korean time), he secured 8.21 points, closing the gap to No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (9.83 points) to 1.62 points. He earned points by winning the PGA Tour Mexico Open (total prize money $7.3 million) held at Vidanta Golf Course in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (par 71) which ended that morning. This is his first win of the season and his 7th career victory, coming 11 months after the US Open in June last year.
Scheffler still has a long way to go, having swept 4 wins in his last 7 tournaments. Scheffler especially hit a high note by winning the prestigious Masters Tournament on the 11th of last month. The second major, the PGA Championship, where both players will compete, has become even more important. It opens on the 19th at Southern Hills Golf Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. Collin Morikawa is 3rd, Patrick Cantlay (USA) 4th, and Cameron Smith (Australia) 5th. Korea’s Im Sung-jae (24) is ranked 19th, Kim Si-woo (27) 51st, Kim Joo-hyung (20) 78th, and Lee Kyung-hoon (31) 88th.
