Park Seong-su, Songpa District Mayor, Officially Announces Candidacy for June 1 Local Election

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Park Seong-su, Mayor of Songpa District, officially declared his challenge for re-election in the 8th nationwide simultaneous local elections on the 2nd, stating, "The unprecedented changes and development in Songpa must continue."

On the morning of the same day, Mayor Park made his candidacy announcement at his campaign office located at 153 Ogeum-ro, Songpa-gu, saying, "During the past four years as mayor, I have elevated Songpa's status as a leader in Seoul. Although it was a short period, we achieved remarkable, unprecedented results that no one else had accomplished."

He continued, "I will transform Songpa from 'Songpa leading Seoul' to 'Songpa beyond Seoul,'" presenting four core visions.

The four core visions are ▲ Songpa as Seoul’s premier luxury city ▲ Songpa as an economic city with a thriving local economy ▲ Songpa as an educational and cultural city ▲ Songpa as a healthy, welfare, and environmentally friendly city with the highest quality of life.

First, to realize "Songpa as Seoul’s premier luxury city," he highlighted ▲ strengthening residential welfare through revitalization and swift promotion of redevelopment, reconstruction, and remodeling ▲ preparing property tax reduction measures to ease excessive burdens on homeowners ▲ lifting the 35-floor height limit to establish the Jamsil Han River skyline ▲ rapid execution of large-scale construction projects such as the Songpa ICT Security Cluster and the Wirye-Sinsa Line metropolitan transportation network. In particular, he emphasized that the Seongdong Detention Center will be developed according to the residents' original plan.

For "Songpa as an economic city with a thriving local economy," he stressed ▲ prioritizing support for self-employed and small business owners who suffered from COVID-19 ▲ creating quality jobs ▲ implementing policies to empower youth.

Regarding "Songpa as an educational and cultural city," he proposed ▲ expanding 'Songpa Saem Season II,' including the Future Education Center, to provide high-quality educational services and support cultural life ▲ advancing education and childcare systems ▲ securing the Korean National University of Arts ▲ establishing the Songpa Culture and Arts Center.

To achieve "Songpa as a healthy, welfare, and environmentally friendly city with the highest quality of life," he emphasized ▲ speedy implementation of 'Songpa Dullegil Season II,' which connects all parts of Songpa to revitalize the local economy ▲ implementing comprehensive welfare policies without blind spots ▲ creating an eco-friendly, carbon-neutral city by reducing fine dust and greenhouse gas emissions.

Mayor Park cited achievements during the four years of the 7th local government, including ▲ opening the Tancheon Trail after 50 years and completing the fully circular Songpa Dullegil ▲ developing Songpa Saem, a specialized education model, the first of its kind among local governments.

He also highlighted ▲ Songpa’s leap to a cultural and artistic hub through various infrastructure developments ▲ enhancing the phased completeness of large-scale development projects ▲ accelerating balanced development in Songpa through the establishment and implementation of comprehensive development plans for Geoyeo and Macheon areas ▲ implementing welfare and youth policies such as the nation’s first coming-of-age support fund, construction of the Youth Hub Building, and expanded support for women and childcare ▲ leading COVID-19 prevention efforts by forming the nation’s first internet quarantine team.

He explained, "Only the capable current Songpa Mayor Park Seong-su can complete Songpa’s future map. That is why I am challenging for re-election."

He pledged, "With prepared policies and execution power, Park Seong-su, who combines administrative and political capabilities, will make Songpa the best city in Korea."

He added, "The fate of an organization or city greatly depends on who the leader is. The mayor must select competent workers," emphasizing, "We must elect honest and trustworthy individuals."

Park Seong-su graduated from Seoul National University College of Law and has served as a prosecutor at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, chief prosecutor, presidential legal secretary at the Blue House, professor at the Judicial Research and Training Institute, adjunct professor at Chung-Ang University Law School, and representative lawyer at the law firm Jeongryul. In 2018, he was elected mayor of Songpa, Seoul’s largest autonomous district, and has diligently performed his duties.

Mayor Park promised, "Please entrust me to complete what Park Seong-su has started. I will repay with unwavering administration centered on the residents."

Meanwhile, prior to his candidacy announcement, Mayor Park visited the Songpa District Election Commission on the morning of the same day to personally submit his preliminary candidate registration documents.
