[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] "Today is the day of destiny."
This was said by a prospective district mayor candidate in Seoul.
The People Power Party, having early nominated Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon as the sole candidate for Seoul mayor, will hold primaries on the 29th and 30th to select district mayor candidates in Seoul.
The final candidates for the district mayor elections will be chosen through opinion polls conducted over two days.
Because of this, the candidates said they are humbly awaiting the results with a praying heart. One district mayor primary candidate stated, "I have done my best over the past month to promote myself as a candidate," adding, "Now, I am waiting for the primary results with a humble heart."
◆ Former National Assembly members such as Jeong Mun-heon (Jongno-gu), Jeong Tae-geun (Seongbuk-gu), Lee Seong-heon (Seodaemun-gu), Lee Eun-jae (Gangnam-gu), and former high-ranking Seoul city officials who passed the civil service exam like Lee Chang-hak (Jung-gu), Kang Maeng-hoon (Seongdong-gu), Kim Kyung-ho (Gwangjin-gu), Seo Gang-seok (Songpa-gu) also draw attention to their results
The primaries will be conducted through telephone opinion polls targeting 50% responsible party members and 50% general residents or 100% general residents in districts such as Jongno, Jung, Yongsan, and Seongdong.
The People Power Party Seoul City Election Commission is expected to receive the results by the afternoon and announce the first-place candidate.
Ultimately, only the first-place winner will secure the ticket to run in the 8th local elections on June 1.
In particular, former National Assembly members such as Jeong Mun-heon (Jongno), Jeong Tae-geun (Seongbuk), Lee Seong-heon (Seodaemun), and Lee Eun-jae (Gangnam) are participating as candidates in the People Power Party Seoul district mayor primaries, making their results highly anticipated.
◆ Attention on whether district mayor candidates for areas such as Gangnam-gu, Seocho-gu, Yeongdeungpo-gu, and Jungnang-gu, where announcements have not been made, will be declared as sole candidates today
In Gangnam-gu, a primary was initially planned among four candidates: Seo Myeong-ok, Seong Jung-gi, Lee Seok-ju, and Lee Eun-jae, but confusion arose due to sudden rumors of a female strategic nomination, leading primary candidates Seong Jung-gi and Lee Seok-ju to hold a press conference criticizing the situation.
In Seocho-gu, while prospective candidates Hwang In-sik, Yoo Jeong-hyun, and Jo So-yeon have called for a primary, rumors of a sole candidate have spread, causing supporters to hold a press conference in front of the central party office in protest.
In Yeongdeungpo-gu, Choi Ho-kwon, and in Jungnang-gu, Ra Jin-gu are known to be strong candidates, drawing attention to the reactions of their opponents.
The People Power Party Seoul district mayor candidates are expected to be finalized by this afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party has decided sole candidates for Jung-gu (Seo Yang-ho), Seongdong-gu (Jeong Won-o), Jungnang-gu (Ryu Gyeong-gi), Nowon-gu (Oh Seung-rok), Eunpyeong-gu (Kim Mi-kyung), Yeongdeungpo-gu (Chae Hyun-il), Gwanak-gu (Park Jun-hee), and Songpa-gu (Park Seong-su), while primaries for the remaining districts are scheduled for May 1-2.
