Reflection of Suncheon City Local Issues in Yoon Seok-yeol Government's Regional Balanced Development Policy Tasks

[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] On the 29th, Suncheon City in Jeollanam-do anticipated that major pending projects, including the creation of a garden city, would gain significant momentum as they were included in the vision announced by the Presidential Transition Committee.

On the 27th, at the Presidential Transition Committee in Jongno-gu, Seoul, Kim Byung-joon, chairman of the Regional Balanced Development Special Committee, announced the vision for regional balanced development.

Among the seven major pledges and fifteen policy tasks for balanced development by region announced that day, the core pledges for Jeollanam-do included local pending projects proposed by Suncheon City.

The regional development pending projects originally proposed by Suncheon City to the new government are ▲ Korea’s first garden city pilot project in Suncheon ▲ Early construction of the Jeolla Line (KTX) high-speed railway ▲ Establishment of a medical school and university hospital in the eastern region of Jeollanam-do ▲ Construction of a national veterans nursing home ▲ Opening of an alternative bypass for National Road No. 2 in the eastern region of Jeollanam-do ▲ Establishment of a National Folk Museum Honam branch ▲ Electrification of the Gyeongjeon Line and undergrounding of the urban section ▲ Construction of the Suncheon Bay mudflat healing center ▲ UNESCO Women’s Bay Marine Garden project ▲ Hosting the 3rd Suncheon World Climate Peace Forum for Northeast Asian peace, among others.

In Jeollanam-do’s seven major pledges and fifteen policy tasks, the creation of Suncheon Garden City as part of the South Coast marine ecological tourism and leisure belt project, and the inclusion of the Jeolla Line (KTX) high-speed railway in the metropolitan transportation network expansion project are expected to achieve regional balanced development.

Additionally, detailed tasks managed separately by the Regional Balanced Development Special Committee include the creation of the Southwest Coast ecological garden city and Suncheon Garden City, as well as the establishment of a National Mudflat Wetland Garden.

Previously, since last year, Suncheon City has been discovering major mega-projects through a new growth engine discovery project in preparation for the presidential election, and has continuously engaged in close communication with political parties, politicians, and central government ministries.

On the 5th, the city visited the transition committee to propose local pending projects for inclusion in the new government’s national agenda.

A Suncheon City official stated, “With the inclusion of the city’s proposed local pending projects in the seven major pledges and fifteen policy tasks for regional balanced development, an opportunity has been created to draw the big picture of a 300,000-population garden city preparing for the next 100 years of Suncheon’s future.”
