Endangered Species Daemo Damselfly First Discovered at Boseong Juamho Artificial Wetland

Endangered Level II Giant Dragonfly Confirmed in Ecological Wetland of Yujeongcheon, a Tributary of Boseong Juamho

Rare Discovery of Endangered Species in Artificial Wetland

Endangered Species Daemo Damselfly First Discovered at Boseong Juamho Artificial Wetland

[Boseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] On the 28th, Jeollanam-do Boseong-gun and Boseong Juamho Ecological Center (operated by the Goheung Boseong Environmental Movement Federation) announced the discovery of the endangered wild species level II, Daemo Damselfly.

On the 15th, during a joint survey by Boseong Juamho Ecological Center and the Southwest Sea Environmental Center, an individual presumed to be a Daemo Damselfly was first discovered, and on the 23rd, an active Daemo Damselfly was confirmed.

The Daemo Damselfly discovered this time is understood to inhabit the Boseong Juamho Ecological Wetland, created around 1803 Songjae-ro, Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do.

It is difficult to determine the exact inflow route of the Daemo Damselfly, but it is presumed to be related to the purified area of Yujeongcheon near the wetland.

Also, since the Boseong Juamho Ecological Wetland was developed as an eco-friendly wetland, it is assumed to provide a suitable habitat environment.

Mr. Kim Seong-su, author of "Field Guide to Dragonflies," said, "The Daemo Damselfly found in Boseong Juamho Ecological Wetland is a male and may be an individual moving between the artificial wetland and Yujeongcheon," adding, "A detailed survey to determine the population and the creation of a habitat environment for the Daemo Damselfly are necessary."

A representative of Boseong Juamho Ecological Center stated, "An expert survey is needed in accordance with the active period of the Daemo Damselfly, and in consultation with the county, plans are underway to conduct investigations on endangered species such as the Daemo Damselfly in Juamho Ecological Wetland."

Boseong-gun plans to conduct a detailed investigation of the Daemo Damselfly habitat and continuously track its distribution within the wetland to accumulate basic data for its conservation.

In particular, they plan to maintain a healthy wetland ecosystem by preserving the habitat wetland and preventing indiscriminate capture.

Meanwhile, the Daemo Damselfly was first designated as an endangered wild species level II in 2012 and inhabits purified areas such as tidal flats, ponds, and wetlands rich in aquatic plants like reeds and organic matter.

It is distributed along the west and south coasts of the Korean Peninsula, as well as in China and Japan, inhabiting lowlands with abundant aquatic plants like reeds and ponds and wetlands with organic-rich sedimented plants on the bottom layer.

Its characteristics include three dark brown spots on the wings and dark brown stripes on the back.
