Efficient Automotive BLDC Motor Control with Low On-Resistance 40V MOSFET
MagnaChip Semiconductor Ltd. (“MagnaChip”) (CEO Youngjoon Kim, NYSE:MX) announced the launch of a new 40V MOSFET (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) product designed to control automotive BLDC (Brushless Direct Current) motors.
As countries worldwide promote carbon neutrality policies for environmental protection, the electric vehicle market is experiencing significant growth. According to market research firm Omdia, the electric vehicle market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 27% from 2022 to 2025. Accordingly, demand for BLDC motors, which are mainly used in electric vehicles due to their high fuel efficiency and durability, as well as MV MOSFETs that support efficient operation of BLDC motors, is expected to continue increasing. MagnaChip has developed a 40V MOSFET for automotive BLDC motor control that reduces heat loss with a low on-resistance RDS(on), and began full-scale mass production in April.
Reliability is critically important for automotive semiconductors as they are directly linked to safety issues affecting human lives. The newly launched 40V MOSFET from MagnaChip has obtained AEC-Q101 (Automotive Electronics Council-Q101) certification, the automotive device reliability standard, confirming its reliability and quality. This MOSFET is scheduled to be installed in the Electric Water Pump (EWP) of new car models launched by global automakers, and because it stably supports three-phase control of BLDC motors, it is also optimized for Electric Oil Pump (EOP), Engine Cooling Fan (ECF), Electric Power Steering (EPS), Battery Cooling Fan (BCF), and other applications.
MagnaChip is expanding its business presence in the automotive semiconductor market with over 10 years of accumulated technology and excellent products in the power semiconductor field. With the global semiconductor supply shortage expected to continue through 2023, MagnaChip is gaining attention as an IDM company capable of stable product supply.
Youngjoon Kim, CEO of MagnaChip, stated, “As competition in the automotive market intensifies, demand for MV MOSFETs is rapidly increasing not only for electric vehicles but also for internal combustion engine vehicles,” adding, “With the launch of this 40V MOSFET, we will further solidify our position in the global market and expand our industry market share.”
