Seong Jung-gi, Gangnam-gu Mayor Primary Candidate, Meets with Won Hee-ryong, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Nominee... Discusses Gangnam-gu Real Estate Issues

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seong Jung-gi, a candidate for the People Power Party's Seoul Gangnam-gu Office chief primary election, met with Won Hee-ryong, the planning committee chairman of the 20th Presidential Transition Committee and the newly appointed Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, on the morning of the 26th at the planning chairman's office on the 3rd floor of the Tongui-dong building. They had an in-depth discussion about real estate issues in Gangnam-gu.

Candidate Seong said, “Gangnam-gu, the heart of conservatism and the area that chose President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol with the highest support rate in this presidential election, was neglected during the Democratic Party administration, especially under Mayor Park Won-soon, due to inequality and reverse discrimination. The residents of Gangnam-gu have been forced to endure unilateral sacrifice and suffering.” He added, “I request that Chairman Won Hee-ryong, upon his appointment as Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, ease regulations on various redevelopment projects in Gangnam-gu to develop it into a premium residential area, and prioritize Gangnam-gu in the development of advanced industries of Korea’s future food sources such as the 4th Industrial Revolution and the metaverse.”

Seong Jung-gi’s “Elegant Gangnam Residential Strategy” consists of two major visions: promoting customized redevelopment projects tailored to location, environment, and residents’ demands, and establishing a broad master plan linked with parks, schools, commercial facilities, followed by development.

The “Gangnam-gu Issues Data” delivered by Candidate Seong to Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport nominee Won Hee-ryong includes a plan to actively pilot the “First Home” policy of the Yoon Suk-yeol government near the “Venture Business Promotion Zone” around Yeoksam-dong, Dogok-dong, and Samseong-dong to enable efficient commuting for young people.

Additionally, it emphasizes developing hub districts for Korea’s future industries such as the 4th Industrial Revolution, robotics, and metaverse industries in areas like Guryong Village, Segok-dong, and Suseo-dong, transforming Gangnam into a global hub. It particularly stresses the necessity of creating future jobs for the youth generation, which President-elect Yoon prioritizes, in Gangnam.

In response, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport nominee Won said, “I recall when you came to Jeju Island as one of the few People Power Party Seoul city council members. I remember your overflowing energy and passion, and especially your remarkable opera singing skills. I understand that President-elect Yoon is grateful for the enthusiastic support from Gangnam residents. If I am appointed as Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, I will form a one-team partnership with the Seoul mayor, Gyeonggi governor, and Gangnam-gu office chief to restore trust in government real estate policies and achieve real estate stabilization that the public desires and the market recognizes.”

Candidate Seong added, “In the past, strategic nominations were made because Gangnam was considered a conservative stronghold, but now Gangnam also needs a district office chief closely connected to the residents. In that sense, I have hoped that a candidate who practices local politics through a primary election would emerge. Although I have many shortcomings, I want to become a district office chief who truly serves the residents of Gangnam-gu, and I hope for a dignified primary election more than anyone else.”

Candidate Won Hee-ryong responded, “Gangnam-gu, the heart of conservatism and the area that showed overwhelming support for President-elect Yoon, is a region of particular interest to the People Power Party. The best candidate will be selected through a fair primary election.”
