‘Mokpo Sapjin Industrial Complex’ Selected for Jeonnam Southwest Region Industrial Complex Major Renovation Project

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Seunghyun] Mokpo City in Jeollanam-do announced on the 27th that the Sapjin Industrial Complex in the region has been selected as a linked area for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's public project, the 'Jeonnam Southwest Industrial Complex Grand Renovation Project.'

This project envisions establishing a hub for eco-friendly small and medium-sized ships and offshore wind power equipment by linking Samho, Hwawon, and Sapjin Industrial Complexes with Daebul Industrial Complex as the base.

Jeollanam-do, Mokpo City, and Yeongam and Haenam counties plan to invest a total project cost of 361.9 billion KRW, including private capital, over three years from 2023 to 2025 to promote 25 detailed projects aligned with the government’s public project schedule for creating an intelligent digital innovation industrial complex, an eco-friendly shipbuilding and marine specialized industrial complex, and a low-carbon green industrial complex.

In the Sapjin Industrial Complex, projects such as establishing a smart shipbuilding and repair system, research and development (R&D) of ship parts, and building logistics chain infrastructure will be promoted to develop it into an eco-friendly ship repair and shipbuilding specialized industrial complex.

Since May last year, Jeollanam-do, Mokpo City, Yeongam, and Haenam counties have been operating a task force (TF) team to prepare for the public project, while also working hard to be selected by conducting expert consulting and visiting the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the National Assembly.

A city official said, “Sapjin Industrial Complex is a shipbuilding-specialized industrial complex completed in 2000 and is now an aging complex over 20 years old. Through the grand renovation of the industrial complex, improvements in the working environment, realization of carbon neutrality, and creation of youth jobs are expected.”

Meanwhile, the industrial complex grand renovation project is a project where regions establish comprehensive plans and promote projects to strengthen manufacturing competitiveness, create jobs, and enhance location competitiveness through industrial complex innovation, and the government supports selected regions by packaging projects from various ministries.
