Former Cheong Political Secretary Kang Ki-jung as Democratic Party Candidate for Gwangju Mayor

[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chae-seok] The Democratic Party's candidate for the Gwangju mayoral election on June 1 has been confirmed as former Blue House Senior Secretary for Political Affairs Kang Ki-jung.

The Democratic Party Central Election Commission announced on the 26th that former Secretary Kang won the Gwangju mayoral primary with 57.14% of the vote, defeating incumbent Mayor Lee Yong-seop, who received 42.86%, and was selected as the final candidate. The party's election commission conducted a primary in the form of a public opinion poll (50% party members, 50% general public) over four days starting from the 23rd, involving former Secretary Kang and Mayor Lee.

Earlier, four candidates applied for the Gwangju mayoral nomination, including former Secretary Kang, Mayor Lee, Kim Hae-kyung, an invited professor at Nambu University, and lawyer Jeong Jun-ho. The party's nomination committee cut off Professor Kim and Lawyer Jeong, then held a 'two-person primary.'
