[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] There has been a claim that addressing the low birthrate and aging population issues requires a national response, including the establishment of a ministerial-level department in charge of population matters.

POSCO announced on the 26th that such opinions were expressed at the 'National Strategy Seminar for Responding to Low Birthrate and Aging Population,' held at the POSCO Center in Seoul with the Korea Economic Research Institute, HanmiGlobal [053690], Seoul National University, SK, and others.

The seminar, held to diagnose the current status of South Korea's low birthrate and aging population and to explore public-private-academic cooperation measures for sustainable development, was attended by Ban Ki-moon, former UN Secretary-General and Honorary Director of the Seoul National University Institute for Future Strategies, Choi Jeong-woo, Chairman of POSCO Group, Kim Jong-hoon, Chairman of HanmiGlobal, and Kwon Tae-shin, President of the Korea Economic Research Institute, among others.

Jung Hyun-sook, professor at Korea National Open University and author of 'Population Crisis Country Japan,' Jeon Young-soo, professor at Hanyang University and author of 'South Korea Population Trends,' and Eun Ki-soo, professor at Seoul National University and former president of the Korean Population Association, presented on Japan's population policies and implications, as well as directions for South Korea's population policies. In his presentation on corporate efforts to overcome low birthrate, Professor Eun cited POSCO's introduction of childbirth and childcare support systems as a model case.

In the subsequent panel discussion, Kim Byung-yeon, Director of the Seoul National University Institute for Future Strategies, and Kim Se-yong, professor at Korea University, participated to discuss national response strategies. The attendees proposed policy measures including the establishment of a ministerial-level department in charge of population issues, the introduction of advanced childcare leave work systems to encourage childbirth, resolving legal status issues of migrant women childcare helpers, and the introduction of a qualification certification system.

HanmiGlobal, which organized the seminar, plans to produce a separate report on these contents and deliver it to the government and the National Assembly.
