[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City and the Daejeon Police Agency will operate a joint crackdown day on delinquent vehicles. The joint crackdown will be conducted simultaneously targeting drunk driving and delinquent vehicles. This is the first case of such a combined operation.
The city announced on the 26th that it will operate a joint crackdown day on the 28th from 9 PM to 11 PM together with the five autonomous districts, the Daejeon Police Agency, and its affiliated police stations.
The joint crackdown will be conducted by simultaneously targeting vehicles that have habitually delinquent automobile taxes and related fines in areas where drunk driving checkpoints are set up within the jurisdiction.
While the city and police have previously cracked down on vehicles with unpaid automobile taxes and fines during daytime hours, this is the first time that delinquent vehicles will be targeted together at nighttime drunk driving checkpoints, according to the city.
The crackdown targets vehicles that have delinquent automobile taxes or fines imposed by the city and autonomous districts, or fines imposed by the Police Agency, specifically vehicles that have been delinquent on automobile taxes two or more times or have unpaid fines exceeding 300,000 KRW for more than 60 days.
The crackdown will be conducted by verifying delinquency status using vehicles equipped with automatic license plate recognition systems held by each agency and smartphone impoundment systems at the drunk driving checkpoints.
Delinquents caught on site will first be encouraged to pay the outstanding amount immediately, and if payment is refused, measures such as license plate impoundment will be taken.
The city plans to continue conducting nighttime joint crackdowns on the last week of every month during the first half (April to June) and second half (September to October) of the year.
A city official said, “We hope that operating the nighttime joint crackdown day will create an atmosphere encouraging voluntary payment of delinquent amounts and serve as an opportunity to realize tax justice,” adding, “The city will continue to strengthen delinquent collection measures while also carrying out support activities for small business owners and livelihood-related delinquents affected by COVID-19.”
