[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The first case of infection with the Omicron subvariant BA.2.3 has been confirmed in China.

The epidemic prevention authorities in Yantai City, Shandong Province, announced on the 25th that Omicron BA.2.3 was detected in 16 of the recently confirmed COVID-19 cases.

This is the first time BA.2.3 has been found in China. The BA.2.3 infected individuals shared the same infection route.

The detailed types of the Omicron variant are divided into BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.2, BA.3, BA.4, and BA.5. Among these, BA.2, known as Stealth Omicron, has a 30% higher transmissibility than BA.1, which is commonly called Omicron, but there is no difference in severity or hospitalization rates.

Chinese epidemic prevention authorities stated regarding the recent surge in cases in Shanghai and other areas, "It is because the highly concealed and rapidly spreading Omicron BA.2 is prevalent," adding, "Since the incubation period is 3 to 5 days, even if there is a family member infected, other family members do not test positive during the incubation period."
