Jeongeup-si Selected for 'Science and Technology Project Opening the Future of the Region' Competition

[Jeongeup=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jae-gil] Jeongeup City in Jeollabuk-do announced on the 22nd that it has been finally selected for the ‘2022 Science and Technology Project Opening the Future of the Region’ organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

Accordingly, the city will promote the ‘Commercialization of Functional Complex Formulations for Improving Productivity and Reducing Carbon Emissions Based on the Gut Microbiome of Economic Animals Using Living Labs’ project, with a total budget of 9.9 billion KRW (4.75 billion KRW national funds, 2.375 billion KRW provincial funds, 2.375 billion KRW city funds).

The microbiome collectively refers to microbes living inside the body and the ecosystem, and is currently being researched in various fields.

The core of this project is to utilize the gut microbiome to improve the productivity of cattle and pigs and develop technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In particular, the project aims to secure effectiveness through on-site verification at livestock farms in the Jeongeup area, and plans to promote a living lab-based R&D project involving researchers, producers, and consumers together.

This project is jointly led by Jeongeup City and Jeollabuk-do, with Jeonbuk Technopark participating as the lead research institution.

Additionally, the Foundation for the Promotion of Microbial Industry for Agriculture and Livestock, Jeonbuk National University Animal Molecular Genetics Breeding Project Group, Jeonbuk Branch of the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, and Jeonbuk Branch of the Safety Evaluation Research Institute participate as joint research and development institutions.

Along with these, Woojin B&G Co., Ltd., Bioten Co., Ltd., and Jeongnong Bio Co., Ltd., companies located in Jeongeup City, will collaborate on research, development, and commercialization.

A city official stated, “We will strive to build an innovative ecosystem for livestock gut microbes by utilizing Jeollabuk-do’s strong microbial research capabilities and infrastructure, and lead innovative growth in the microbial industry through linkage and cooperation between local companies and farms.”

Meanwhile, the Foundation for the Promotion of Microbial Industry for Agriculture and Livestock has established a complex microbial safety analysis system with 23 types of tests including gas chromatography, supporting safety evaluation and industrialization of microbial products from domestic companies as a testing, analysis, and certification institution.
