Janssen, 10 People Vaccinated Over Four Days... "Plan to Use for Domestic Vaccination and Donate or Utilize the Rest"

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] On the 21st, 492,000 doses of the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine will arrive in South Korea.

The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that the individually contracted Janssen vaccines are scheduled to be delivered to Incheon Airport on this day. As of midnight on the 21st, the cumulative number of Janssen vaccine doses administered domestically is 1,542,803, so the newly introduced doses correspond to about one-third of that amount.

Currently, Janssen vaccine administration in South Korea is low. There were 0 doses on the 18th, 8 on the 19th, 1 on the 20th, and 1 on the 21st, totaling 10 people vaccinated with the Janssen vaccine this week. On the 20th alone, 55,708 people received the Pfizer vaccine. The Janssen vaccine is targeted at those aged 18 and older and is not used for the relatively recent third dose for ages 12-17 or the primary vaccination for ages 5-11. Janssen is also not included in the fourth dose vaccines for the elderly.

Kwon Geun-yong, head of the Vaccination Management Team at the COVID-19 Vaccination Response Headquarters, said, "The Janssen vaccine is being used by a very small number of people," adding, "The 492,000 doses arriving today are part of the existing contract; some will be used for domestic vaccinations, and other uses such as donations are being considered."

Including the Janssen vaccine doses arriving today, a total of 18.54 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been supplied domestically. The total Janssen vaccine doses scheduled for delivery this year are 4.49 million, with about 4 million additional doses expected to be introduced into the country.
