[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] Every year on April 22nd is "Earth Day." It was established in 1970 to raise awareness of the seriousness of global environmental pollution and to protect the Earth's environment. Recently, with the spotlight on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, awareness of environmental pollution and climate change has changed compared to the past, and many companies are participating to improve these issues.

Dong-A ST, a specialty pharmaceutical company, is one of the leading companies practicing ESG management in the pharmaceutical and bio industry. Just as it contributes to improving human health by developing medicines, it is actively engaging in activities for the health of the Earth. This year, Dong-A ST employees participated in the "Forest of Peace" creation commemorative event held in Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi-do, where they worked hard planting trees themselves. Before the Forest of Peace event, Dong-A ST recruited participants among its employees, and more people applied than expected, so participants were selected by lottery.

The Yeoncheon Forest of Peace creation event was organized to reduce conflicts and disputes on the Korean Peninsula and to enhance the value of coexistence where nature and humans help each other and live together. The area where the Forest of Peace was created is near Jaein Waterfall, designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Global Geopark, located about 20 km from the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). In the Forest of Peace, a total of 3,000 trees of native Korean species such as plum trees, Korean bush clover, wax trees, and heuri were planted to restore the rapidly declining honeybee population and protect the Korean Peninsula ecosystem.

The newly created Forest of Peace is expected to contribute to increasing biodiversity by providing habitats and food sources for various creatures such as honeybees and birds. Dong-A ST plans to cooperate with Yeoncheon-gun to ensure the Forest of Peace is well preserved in the future. Previously, Dong-A ST also participated in the creation of urban forests in Nowon-gu, Seoul in 2018 and the Forest of Peace event in Cheorwon in 2020.

In addition, Dong-A ST has been holding the Youth Environmental and Life Love Classroom since 2004. Through this event, young people, the future leaders, can learn the importance of the environment and life. Middle school students who participated in the past events learned about climate change, biodiversity, our environmental footprint, and the oceans and forests endangered by climate change through lectures and various hands-on programs such as making My Little Marimo, eco-friendly toothpaste, sunscreen, shampoo bars, and online neighborhood environmental plogging. A Dong-A ST official said, "We will do our best to create environmental protection activities and various social values."

Meanwhile, Dong-A ST established the "Social Value Committee" in 2020 for sustainable management and co-growth with society. It is realizing sustainable management growing together with society by carrying out various social value creation activities such as supporting medication costs for low-income cancer patients and donating growth hormones for children with short stature.
