[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 21st that it will strengthen drunk driving crackdowns in line with the full lifting of COVID-19 social distancing measures.

While the police previously focused crackdowns around closing hours of restaurants and other businesses, they now plan to conduct crackdowns regardless of location during both day and night hours, including late-night times.

Each police station will select two or more locations vulnerable to drunk driving and conduct "spot" crackdowns by moving between locations every 30 minutes to 1 hour. The Western, Gyeyang, Samsan, and Nonhyeon police stations, which have jurisdiction over the Incheon city boundary areas, will conduct crackdowns at one or more boundary locations daily.

Additionally, with the spring outing season approaching, drunk driving crackdowns will be intensified at recreational areas, and police motorcycles, undercover patrol cars, and riot police units will also support the drunk driving enforcement efforts. The Highway Patrol will conduct daily drunk driving crackdowns at three or more locations such as highway entrances and exits, interchanges, and toll gates.

Meanwhile, from January 1 to the 17th of this year in the Incheon area, there was one fatal drunk driving accident and 218 drunk driving traffic accidents, representing decreases of 83.3% and 16.5% respectively compared to the same period last year.

On the other hand, the number of drunk driving enforcement cases during this period increased by 13.1% year-on-year to 1,865 cases.
