[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Incheon City announced on the 20th that it has launched a study on the 'Development Strategy and Basic Plan Establishment for the Area Surrounding Baengnyeong Airport.'
This one-year project is being promoted to establish a direction for regional development in preparation for the opening of Baengnyeong Airport and to find ways to expand tourism and leisure infrastructure that can accommodate visitor demand.
The city plans to prepare measures to improve the quality of life and increase income for local residents, build new growth foundations, revitalize the regional economy, and expand infrastructure in the study.
Additionally, the city will estimate the scale of investment around the airport, present feasibility analyses and financing plans, and analyze various ripple effects according to the master plan.
The Baengnyeong Airport construction project is a key initiative promoted by Incheon City and Ongjin County to improve living conditions for residents of the northernmost island in the West Sea and to guarantee a one-day living zone. It was selected as a preliminary feasibility study project in November last year, and the Korea Development Institute (KDI) is currently conducting the investigation.
Baengnyeong Airport is scheduled to open in 2027 and will be equipped with a 1.2 km long and 30 m wide runway, passenger terminal, apron, and control tower on a 254,000㎡ site in the Solgae district of Baengnyeongdo.
It will be a small airport capable of handling 50-seat aircraft takeoffs and landings, with a project cost of 174 billion KRW.
