[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The prosecution has requested a one-year prison sentence for Park Hyun-jong, chairman of bhc, who was indicted on charges of illegally accessing the internal computer network of rival chicken company BBQ.
On the 18th, at the sentencing hearing held at the Seoul Eastern District Court Criminal Division 11 (Presiding Judge Jeong Won), the prosecution asked for this sentence for Chairman Park. The prosecution stated, "The defendant, who is the CEO of a competing company, violated the Personal Information Protection Act by illegally accessing the competitor's computer network from his office," adding, "He was uncooperative during the investigation and the nature of the crime is serious."
In his final defense, Chairman Park's lawyer argued, "The prosecution's premise that he hacked into the competitor's internal computer network is contrary to the reality of the business," and "There is no evidence that the defendant accessed the BBQ network during the year-long evidence investigation process." Previously, Chairman Park was indicted for allegedly accessing the BBQ internal computer network twice on July 3, 2015, at the bhc headquarters office in Songpa-gu, Seoul, by using the IDs and passwords of former and current BBQ employees A and B.
The court has scheduled the sentencing hearing for June 8.
