[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] The number of new COVID-19 cases has dropped below 50,000 for the first time in 68 days. The number of deaths in a single day also recorded the lowest since March 3 of last month.


On the 18th, the Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight, 47,743 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 16,353,495. This is a decrease of 45,258 cases compared to the previous day (93,001 cases).


The number of new confirmed cases falling below 50,000 is the first time in 68 days since February 9. Based on Monday data, this is the lowest in 9 weeks. Compared to last Monday's confirmed cases (90,917), it is about half.


The number of deaths in a single day yesterday was 132, the lowest since March 3 of last month (128). The cumulative number of deaths is 21,224, with a fatality rate of 0.13%.


The number of critically ill patients currently hospitalized is 850, remaining in the 800s for the second consecutive day. This is a decrease of 43 from the previous day (893). The nationwide critical care bed occupancy rate is 48.5%. Specifically, it is 46.1% in the metropolitan area and 54.2% in non-metropolitan areas.


On the 18th, the number of new patients receiving home treatment was 59,058. As of midnight on the 18th, the total number of home treatment patients is 742,367, among whom 65,954 are in the intensive management group receiving health care from medical institutions.
