[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Kim Mi-kyung, the mayor of Eunpyeong District, has officially declared her bid for re-election and has begun full-scale election campaigning.

On the afternoon of the 15th, Mayor Kim visited the Eunpyeong District Election Commission and registered as a preliminary candidate for the Eunpyeong District mayoral election.

After submitting the preliminary candidate registration documents, Mayor Kim stated, “I thought it would be disrespectful to the residents to step down from my position as head of the Eunpyeong Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters and register as a candidate while the COVID-19 quarantine situation had not yet stabilized. However, with the government’s announcement today to lift social distancing measures, I am now able to register as a preliminary candidate for the Eunpyeong District mayoral election.”

She added, “Since my start is later than other candidates, I will run one step further to make up for the gap,” showing her determination.

Mayor Kim emphasized her unique strength compared to other candidates, saying, “As the incumbent mayor, I am fully familiar with every alley and every project in Eunpyeong District,” and stressed, “Kim Mi-kyung is the only candidate who can immediately handle district administration without wasting time understanding basic tasks upon election.”

Regarding the most urgent local issues in Eunpyeong District, she pointed to the recovery of the local economy after COVID-19, the prompt promotion of redevelopment and reconstruction, and the expansion of the metropolitan transportation network.

On the local economic recovery plan after COVID-19, she said, “Last weekend, the ‘Spring of Eunpyeong’ concert held at Bulgwangcheon attracted crowds to nearby restaurants and shops,” and added, “I will create many reasons for people to visit Eunpyeong District and revitalize the local economy.”

As for the prompt promotion of redevelopment and reconstruction and the expansion of the metropolitan transportation network, she stated, “What is most important in development is a well-organized plan and speed,” and said, “Having served as the first female chairperson of the Seoul Urban Planning Management Committee and led the establishment of the ‘2030 Seoul Plan,’ Kim Mi-kyung, as mayor of Eunpyeong District, will accelerate the district’s development by finalizing the ‘2040 Eunpyeong Plan.’”

After registering as a preliminary candidate, Mayor Kim’s first schedule was to visit the GTX-A Yeonsinnae Station construction site to listen to on-site voices.

Mayor Kim toured the construction site with officials and said, “When GTX-A opens in 2024, it is expected to greatly contribute to revitalizing the local commercial district around Yeonsinnae Station,” and urged, “Please make every effort to ensure that the GTX-A Yeonsinnae Station construction, which the residents and local merchants of Eunpyeong District earnestly wish for, is completed safely without any accidents.”
