If 10 or More Citizens Gather, Labor Education Provided at Desired Location
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City will dispatch labor experts directly to the site to provide customized labor education if 10 or more Seoul citizens gather and apply for education. The topics range from basic labor laws to the recently highlighted issue of ‘prevention of workplace harassment.’
On the 15th, Seoul City announced that it will start the Seoul Labor Academy’s ‘Visiting Education’ from May, going to places where Seoul citizens and workers are located, and is recruiting organizations, institutions, and companies wishing to participate in the education until the 25th.
The Seoul Labor Academy’s ‘Visiting Education’ is a method where if 10 or more Seoul citizens gather as a group, institution, or meeting and apply for education, a labor expert tailored to the characteristics of the participants visits the site to conduct the education. The instructors are experts in various fields, such as certified labor attorneys commissioned by the Seoul Labor Rights Center.
The education consists of three topics: labor law, prevention of workplace sexual harassment, and prevention of workplace harassment, each conducted for two hours. Applicants can choose one topic among the three to apply for education. To enhance the effectiveness of the education, the sessions will be conducted in small groups of fewer than 20 participants, but large-scale lectures are also possible if requested by the applying institution.
In the labor law course for working individuals, the education focuses on basic contents of labor-related laws such as the Labor Standards Act, covering topics from drafting employment contracts to working hours and breaks, wages, unfair dismissal, enabling workers to protect their own rights. Additionally, cases of occupational accidents are shared, and response measures for each case are intensively delivered.
Education on the prevention of workplace sexual harassment and workplace harassment, which are recent issues, will also be conducted. Certified labor attorneys and labor law experts, along with professional instructors, share concepts of sexual harassment and harassment, judgment criteria, and cases. Furthermore, detailed information on how to respond when damage occurs, as well as reporting and relief agencies, is provided.
While the basic education is centered on workers, when visiting institutions and companies, the role and duties of organizations to protect workers’ rights, prevention of secondary damage, and organizational response measures will also be conveyed. Organizations, institutions, and companies wishing to participate in the Seoul Labor Academy’s ‘Visiting Education’ can apply for education on the Seoul Labor Portal’s ‘Visiting Education’ page until the 25th. After confirming the region to which their institution belongs, they can submit the education application form to the relevant supervising center within the Labor Portal.
Jang Young-min, Seoul City’s Labor Policy Officer, said, “The purpose is to directly visit workers who find it difficult to participate in education due to time constraints or circumstances and provide focused and close education so that workers can protect their rights themselves and respond when rights violations occur.” He added, “For workers in need of help, customized counseling and legal relief support will continue to be provided at the Seoul Labor Rights Center and 22 other worker support centers.”
