Biden "Continuing to Provide Defensive Capabilities to Ukraine"
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The United States will provide an additional military aid worth 1 trillion won to Ukraine. This decision comes as Russia's 'Donbas decisive battle' is imminent, prompting the provision of a large amount of new weapons.
On the 13th (local time), U.S. President Joe Biden announced additional military aid worth $800 million (approximately 980 billion won) to Ukraine through a White House statement. With this support, the total U.S. military assistance to Ukraine has exceeded $3 billion.
President Biden said, "The Ukrainian military has achieved devastating effects with the weapons we have provided," and added, "As Russia prepares to intensify its attacks on the eastern Donbas region, the United States will continue to provide Ukraine with defensive capabilities."
The new military aid includes tailored capabilities against Russia's extensive attacks, along with systems already provided to Ukraine.
Specifically, it includes 18 units of 155mm howitzers and 40,000 shells, 11 Soviet-era Mi-17 transport helicopters, 200 M113 armored vehicles, 300 Switchblade anti-tank drones, 500 Javelin anti-tank missiles, and counter-battery radars.
Notably, this is the first time the U.S. has provided howitzers related to this war. John Kirby, U.S. Department of Defense spokesperson, explained, "This is in response to a special request from the Ukrainian government."
Regarding this U.S. aid, the Financial Times analyzed, "It signifies a significant expansion of U.S. involvement in the Ukraine war," and "It also reflects the belief of the U.S. and its allies that Russia is less likely to retaliate against the Western world as the war progresses."
President Biden's announcement came immediately after a 58-minute phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The White House stated, "President Biden updated President Zelenskyy on the ongoing U.S. support for Ukraine and also said that Americans will continue to stand with the brave Ukrainians fighting for freedom."
Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) also approved additional military aid worth $530 million (approximately 650 billion won) to Ukraine. The aid items include personal protective equipment, emergency medical kits, fuel, and military defense supplies.
The EU Council said, "As Russia prepares for an eastern offensive, it is important to continue strengthening military support," adding, "Next week will be decisive."
