[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Samsung C&T Fashion Division's French contemporary brand 'Lemaire' announced on the 14th that it will hold an exhibition of American folk artist Joseph Elmer Yoakum titled ‘INSCAPE: Inner’ from the 15th to the 24th at Garosu-gil, Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
This is the first time that Lemaire, a brand with many fans for its sophisticated Parisian-inspired collections, is hosting an artist exhibition in Korea. It is also the first time that an exhibition of Joseph Elmer Yoakum is held in Korea.
Joseph Elmer Yoakum (1890?1972) was an American folk artist of Native American descent with a short and late career and a unique biography. He worked in a circus troupe as a child, migrated to France as a soldier during World War I, and later traveled across the American West by train before settling in Chicago at the age of 70 to devote himself to creating art. He painted over 2,000 landscapes solely from memory, capturing the life of a nomad in his works.
Lemaire presents 14 works depicting landscapes Joseph Elmer Yoakum encountered during his travels across the United States and various regions. In addition, Lemaire offers a spring/summer (S/S) capsule collection created as an homage to Joseph Elmer Yoakum. The collection features lightweight silk and cotton dresses and shirts inspired by his serene landscapes and vivid paintings. The exhibition is accessible by advance reservation.
Jeon Bora, team leader at 10 Corso Como, said, "Lemaire is holding the first-ever exhibition in Korea of artist Joseph Elmer Yoakum, who greatly inspired this season’s collection," adding, "It is a great opportunity to experience Joseph Elmer Yoakum’s immersive and lyrical paintings alongside Lemaire’s special collection honoring him."
