[Golf Topic] Love III Captain: "Woods Can Participate as a Player in the Presidents Cup"

[Asia Economy Reporter Noo Rae] ○…‘Golf Emperor’ Tiger Woods (USA) is likely to participate as a player in the upcoming Presidents Cup, the USA-International golf competition held in September.

Davis Love III, captain of the USA team, said on the 14th (Korean time), "If Woods wants, he can participate in any role on the USA team." He had planned to appoint him as a vice-captain along with Jack Johnson and Fred Couples, but after seeing Woods' successful comeback at the Masters last week, he changed his mind. "We considered assigning Woods as a vice-captain," he said, "but if he wants to play not only as a vice-captain but also as a player, we would have to accept that."

Woods served as both captain and player during the 2019 Presidents Cup, leading the team to victory. After a car accident in February, Woods underwent surgery and endured a difficult rehabilitation before returning to the field. He finished 47th at the Masters held at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, USA, on the 11th. He expressed, "This will remain one of the most important achievements in my golf career," and added, "I am grateful to have completed a major just 14 months after the accident."

Love III praised Woods, saying, "I never thought he would be able to play again after the car accident," and added, "Woods has proven that we were wrong." He continued, "I have talked a lot with Woods over the past year and a half and know what goals he has been striving for," and evaluated, "No matter what physical problems arise, he can move toward his goals." The Presidents Cup, held every two years, will take place for the first time in three years due to COVID-19.
