[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] On the morning of the 14th, Prosecutor General Kim Oh-soo visited the National Assembly to meet with Park Kwang-on, the Chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, to persuade him against the complete removal of prosecutorial investigation rights (Geomsu Wanbak).
According to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office on the day, Prosecutor General Kim planned to meet Chairman Park before the Legislation and Judiciary Committee meeting. This meeting was arranged at the request of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office.
Prosecutor General Kim is expected to explain to Chairman Park Kwang-on that it has only been about a year since the adjustment of investigation rights was made, and that confusion such as investigation delays still exists. He will express concerns that causing a sudden change in the criminal justice system again could negatively impact the nation's crime response capabilities.
The day before, Prosecutor General Kim stated that the Democratic Party's bill to completely remove prosecutorial investigation rights (Geomsu Wanbak), which they are pushing to pass within this month, "directly violates the Constitution," and said he would first visit the National Assembly, which is proceeding with the legislative process.
