'2022 Seoul Marathon' Held on the 17th from Gwanghwamun Square to Jamsil Sports Complex Area

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 14th that it will hold the '2022 Seoul Marathon' as a hybrid event combining both online and offline formats.

Seoul will host the international elite race (offline) on the 17th around Gwanghwamun Square to Jamsil Sports Complex, and the Masters race (online) over two days from the 16th to the 17th. The Seoul Marathon is the only domestic marathon certified by the World Athletics as a global athletics cultural heritage and is one of the world's seven platinum label international marathons.

The event will be held in a hybrid format of online and offline again this year. The international elite category, held offline on the 17th from Gwanghwamun Square to Jamsil Sports Complex, will feature 131 participants from 9 countries, including the top 10 athletes ranked within the top 30 worldwide.

The Masters race, conducted online in a non-face-to-face manner, consists of four categories: free course, 10km, half marathon, and full marathon, allowing participants to choose according to their level without burden. Participants can run freely and then measure and verify their records using GPS applications. Approximately 21,000 marathon enthusiasts and general citizens are expected to participate in the Masters category.

On the 17th, when the offline '2022 Seoul Marathon' takes place, staged traffic control will be enforced from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM along the main marathon route from Gwanghwamun Square to Jamsil Sports Complex. For detailed information on traffic control times and detour routes, please contact the 120 Dasan Call Center or refer to the provided photo materials.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to work closely with each district office, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, emergency medical institutions, and others to minimize citizen inconvenience caused by traffic control and to ensure the event proceeds safely without accidents.

Choi Kyung-joo, Director of the Seoul Tourism and Sports Bureau, stated, “The Seoul Marathon is undoubtedly the highest-level international marathon held domestically. It will enhance the performance of domestic athletes, contribute to the activation of the recently spotlighted running culture, and expand the base of the marathon population.”
