[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] The "2022 New York International Auto Show," the oldest car exhibition in the United States, was held for the first time in three years. The key themes of this exhibition, held after a long hiatus due to COVID-19, are summarized as electric vehicles and sport utility vehicles (SUVs).
Marking its 120th edition this year, the New York Auto Show began its press day event on the 13th (local time) and will run from the 15th to the 24th at the Javits Center in Manhattan, New York City.
A total of 33 brands participated, including global leading automakers such as Hyundai Motor Company and Kia, Stellantis, Toyota, Ford, Nissan, as well as electric vehicle specialized companies. These brands unveiled over 50 models, including concept cars and new vehicles.
Nearly two-thirds of the first-floor exhibition hall was dedicated to electric vehicle experience zones. At the electric vehicle test track, visitors could directly experience models such as the Kia EV6, Chevrolet Bolt, IndiEV's Indi One, Nissan Leaf, VinFast V8, Volkswagen ID.4 EV, and Volvo XC40 Recharge. Hyundai and Ford each set up their own dedicated electric vehicle test tracks.
The exhibition featured not only electric vehicles from major automakers but also electric vehicle models from emerging companies such as the American EV startup IndiEV and Vietnam's VinFast.
Through this exhibition, Hyundai and Kia introduced their large SUVs, "The New Palisade" and "The New Telluride," respectively, for the first time. This reflects the trend of high SUV popularity in the U.S. market.
The New Palisade is the first facelift model of Hyundai's flagship SUV Palisade, characterized by upgraded design, enhanced safety features, and the addition of various driving assistance functions.
Kia also unveiled The New Telluride, the first facelift model of the Telluride, after three years. The New Telluride will be officially launched in the North American market in the second half of the year. Alongside this, Kia revealed the eco-friendly SUV model "The All New Kia Niro" (new Niro).
Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Euisun personally attended the event to directly assess trends in the North American automotive market. Hyundai's Ioniq 5 swept three awards, including the grand prize "Car of the Year," at the World Car Awards "2022 Car of the Year" ceremony held at the New York Auto Show venue that day.
