Gwangju Seo-gu Prepares Sewol Ferry Memorial Hall... Open Until the 16th

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 13th that it has set up a memorial hall in the first-floor lobby of the district office under the slogan "Memory, Promise, Responsibility," proposed by the Sewol Ferry Disaster Families Association, to commemorate the 8th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry Disaster on April 16, and will operate it until the 16th.

On the same day at 10 a.m., Seo-gu held a memorial ceremony with a minimized scale in compliance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines. Considering the national sentiment, the ceremony was conducted calmly and solemnly with voluntary participation.

In the first-floor lobby of Seo-gu Office, where the memorial hall was set up, a large memorial banner was displayed, and a memorial tree for the victims of the Sewol Ferry Disaster was installed. Citizens and public officials visiting the office were able to write memorial messages on yellow paper boats and ribbons and hang them directly.

A resident who attended the memorial ceremony, Ms. Kim (51, female), said, "Although eight years have passed, the clocks of the victims seem to have stopped at the moment of April 16, 2014." She added, "In front of the souls of 304 people, I will not forget you and hope to pass on a safer country to future generations."

A Seo-gu official stated, "We will do our best to remember the victims of the Sewol Ferry Disaster and foster sensitivity to human rights, safety, and peace to create a society that respects life and ensures safety."
