Changwon City, Gyeongnam Province, will additionally install neighborhood recycling collection facilities.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Changwon City, Gyeongnam Province, will additionally install eight 'Neighborhood Yard' recycling collection facilities.
The recycling Neighborhood Yard is a hub collection facility where recyclable items such as paper, transparent PET bottles, plastics, cans, and bottles are separated by category and can be disposed of regardless of the day of the week.
This initiative was promoted to assist proper waste separation by installing hub collection and pickup facilities in vulnerable areas such as rural and single-family housing areas, and to foster recycling resource utilization and a resource circulation atmosphere.
Last year, the city installed eight locations: four in Uipoong Mujeom-ri, Daesan-myeon Ildong-ri, Gasul-ri, and Buk-myeon Masan-ri in Uichang-gu; three in Jinjeon-myeon Dongsan-ri, Jindong-myeon Singi-ri Singi Village, and Jukjeon Village in Masanhappo-gu; and one in Jangcheon 1-budu Jangcheon Village, Jangcheon-dong, Jinhae-gu.
As a result of operating the Neighborhood Yard, awareness of waste separation and resource recycling has changed, illegal dumping around the installation areas has been prevented, leading to a decrease in related complaints and improvements in the village environment image.
The city plans to add and operate eight more locations by the end of July this year with a budget of 105 million KRW.
The new installation sites are ▲ three locations in Uichang-gu Buk-myeon: Naegok-ri, Wolchon-ri, Daesan-myeon Yudeung-ri ▲ three locations in Masanhappo-gu: Geungok-ri and Yulti-ri in Jinjeon-myeon, and Gubok-ri in Gusan-myeon ▲ two locations in Jinhae-gu: Seokdong and Bukbu Village in Ungcheon-dong.
The recycling Neighborhood Yard is made of stainless steel metal structures measuring 6m wide × 2m long × 2.5m high.
The facility consists of six disposal bins for transparent PET bottles, plastics, glass bottles/scrap metal/cans, vinyl, styrofoam, and waste paper, with separate fluorescent lighting and waste battery collection boxes provided in the external space.
On the outer walls of the disposal bins, signs explaining proper separation and disposal methods are posted, and inside the bins, holders for bags and transparent trash bags are arranged.
Doors are installed for easy access by collection vehicles, and CCTV will be installed if necessary.
A city official stated, “Continuous disposal will increase resident convenience and satisfaction, establish a public-private cooperation system, utilize auxiliary equipment, and resolve resident inconveniences such as disposal time restrictions. Clean management of disposal sites will also improve collection efficiency and recycling rates.”
Kim Taesoon, head of the Resource Circulation Division, said, “Separating recyclables is not a choice but a duty. We hope residents recognize that it starts with their own families and cultivate the habit of practicing separation in daily life to actively participate in creating a pleasant and clean neighborhood.”
