Vehicles with More Than Two Unpaid Car Tax Installments Subject to License Plate Seizure and Online Auction
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] Gyeongsan City in Gyeongbuk Province has decided to take "strong measures" to collect local tax arrears by May 31.
As of the end of last year, Gyeongsan City's local tax arrears amounted to 18 billion KRW, and during this period of comprehensive arrears collection, the city plans to collect more than 7.2 billion KRW (40% of the arrears).
The city has formed four regional and team-based responsibility collection squads (12 members in total), led by the deputy mayor, to carry out efficient collection activities.
By conducting nationwide property investigations of defaulters, the city will seize all confirmed assets including real estate and enforce high-intensity collection measures such as public auctions for long-term defaulters.
Additionally, vehicles with more than two unpaid automobile tax payments will have their license plates confiscated, and habitual defaulters including "daepocha" (cloned vehicles) will be forcibly repossessed and sold via online auctions.
However, for socially considerate cases such as small businesses and low-income defaulters who face temporary economic difficulties, the city will encourage installment payments and defer collection actions.
A Gyeongsan City official stated, "We will do our utmost to foster a sound tax payment culture and promote fair tax compliance through strict collection measures and administrative sanctions."
