[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] On the 12th, the People Power Party immediately opposed the Democratic Party of Korea's decision to adopt the 'Complete Removal of Prosecution's Investigation Rights (Geomsu Wanbak)' bill as a party policy, stating that it is an attempt to create a "bulletproof bill" to protect former President Moon Jae-in and Advisor Lee Jae-myung.

Park Hyung-soo, the floor spokesperson for the People Power Party, said in a statement on the same day, "The irrational Democratic Party's Geomsu Wanbak will be self-defeating."

Park said, "With the adjustment of investigative rights between the police and prosecution forcibly passed by the Democratic Party and the Moon Jae-in administration in January last year, investigations of high-ranking officials are already the responsibility of the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Office (Gongsucheo), and the prosecution's involvement in general criminal cases is limited," adding, "If Geomsu Wanbak was truly necessary, the Democratic Party should have pursued it last January instead of adjusting the investigative rights between the police and prosecution."

He continued, "The only difference between then and now is that the People Power Party won the presidential election," emphasizing, "Ultimately, the forced passage of the Geomsu Wanbak bill goes against the will of the people expressed in the presidential election and is an attempt to create a bulletproof bill to protect former President Moon Jae-in and Advisor Lee Jae-myung."

He also said, "It is an attempt to permanently cover up the Daejang-dong gate, the manipulation of the economic feasibility evaluation of the Wolseong nuclear power plant, the interference in the Ulsan mayoral election, and the embezzlement of beef with corporate credit cards, creating a world where criminals run rampant," and explained, "A bill that completely strips the prosecution of its investigative rights is unconstitutional because it abolishes the prosecution's investigative rights guaranteed under Article 12, Paragraph 3 and Article 16 of the Constitution by law."

Park criticized the Democratic Party for being so eager to take away the six investigative rights of the prosecution that have already been adjusted that there has been no in-depth discussion about where those investigative rights should go. He said, "Even the Justice Party has opposed the Geomsu Wanbak bill, stating that they cannot agree with the timing, procedure, or content," and criticized, "In the midst of COVID-19 and rapidly changing domestic and international situations, and for the common people suffering from economic recession and high inflation, Geomsu Wanbak, which goes beyond the adjustment of investigative rights between the police and prosecution, sounds like a story from a distant country."
