[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education announced that it has been operating the Sewol Ferry 8th Anniversary Memorial Period from the 11th to the 20th.
A memorial ceremony and remembrance events marking the Sewol Ferry Memorial Period were also held.
About 40 people participated in the event, including Superintendent Jang Hwi-guk, Vice Superintendent Kim Hwan-sik, department heads, and staff from the Democratic Citizenship Education Division. The event proceeded in the order of a moment of silence for the Sewol Ferry victims, watching the video "Sorry, We Will Remember," memorial speeches, and flying yellow paper airplanes symbolizing a promise to create a safe world.
In accordance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines, for employees who could not attend the memorial event, the ceremony video was streamed live to each department, allowing all staff within the office to share a meaningful time commemorating the 304 Sewol Ferry victims together.
Education support offices, affiliated institutions, and schools at all levels will conduct various Sewol Ferry 8th anniversary memorial events such as memorial ceremonies, banner postings, and special educational programs.
In particular, through the "Sewol Ferry Goes to School" project, student councils are empowered to take the lead in organizing memorial events.
Additionally, various educational materials developed by the Office of Education, such as monthly meetings on stories of democratic citizenship and related videos, will be actively used to remember the Sewol Ferry disaster once again and to conduct distinctive special educational programs.
Superintendent Jang Hwi-guk said, "While not forgetting the reality of the Sewol Ferry disaster, let us constantly reflect on how to create a safe and happy education environment in Gwangju for children based on its lessons, each in our own place, and practice together. I pray for the repose of the souls of the Sewol Ferry victims and all those who lost their lives during the rescue operations."
