[Asia Economy Reporter Hyungsoo Park] Semiconductor equipment company Hanmi Semiconductor announced on the 12th that its micro SAW, an essential semiconductor package process equipment, won the '2022 IR52 Jang Young-sil Award' hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
Micro SAW is equipment that cuts (SAW) semiconductor packages. It succeeded in domestic production for the first time in the Korean semiconductor equipment industry, breaking free from the influence of foreign competitors who had been leading the global market in the semiconductor saw sector. It is evaluated as a milestone that increased the self-reliance of material, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang) companies in the domestic IT industry.
Hanmi Semiconductor's CEO, Vice Chairman Dongshin Kwak, said, "Since successfully domesticating micro SAW in June last year, we have introduced a total of four micro SAW models to the market as of last month," adding, "We will also launch additional models in the second half of this year."
He continued, "The internalization of micro SAW is expected to reduce costs by about 100 billion KRW annually in terms of import substitution," emphasizing, "Based on customer evaluations that highlight faster equipment delivery, and superior productivity, convenience, and reliability compared to competitors, we are expanding our dominance in overseas markets."
Hanmi Semiconductor launched its first 'Dual-Chuck Micro SAW' in June last year and introduced the '20-inch Micro SAW for Flip Chip BGA' in October of the same year. Subsequently, they also released the '12-inch Micro SAW' and the 'Tape Micro SAW' dedicated to automotive semiconductors.
The IR52 Jang Young-sil Award selects and rewards outstanding new technology products developed by companies and research institutes, as well as organizations with excellent technological innovation achievements, boosting the morale of technology developers.
