[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] The number of passengers using Jeju Air's domestic flights has increased more than fourfold compared to 2019.
Jeju Air announced on the 11th that an analysis of domestic flight boarding data over the past three years showed that inland route passengers increased from 300,000 in 2019 to 1.3 million last year, more than four times, while passengers on routes from regional airports to Jeju increased from 1.89 million to 2.71 million during the same period.
This is attributed to the airline's focus on expanding domestic travel demand amid difficulties in overseas travel due to COVID-19, by newly entering routes from regional airports to Jeju (Yeosu·Gunsan~Jeju) and inland routes (Gimpo~Yeosu·Gwangju) over the past two years and increasing frequencies on existing routes.
In 2019, Jeju Air operated six domestic scheduled routes (Gimpo, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, Cheongju~Jeju, Gimpo~Busan). Since then, four more scheduled routes have been added, bringing the total to 10 domestic scheduled routes.
The creation of new routes from regional airports has played a pivotal role in revitalizing regional airports by increasing passenger numbers and has also changed the distribution of passengers by route.
Last year, passengers on the Gimpo~Jeju route slightly decreased compared to 2019, whereas passengers departing from regional airports to Jeju reached 2.71 million last year, a 43% increase compared to 2019.
Passengers on the Cheongju~Jeju route increased from 480,000 to 730,000, reaching a level similar to the 740,000 passengers on the Busan~Jeju route. Passengers on the Daegu~Jeju and Gwangju~Jeju routes nearly doubled, increasing from 270,000 and 250,000 to 500,000 and 440,000 respectively.
There was also a significant increase in passengers on inland routes. Passengers on the Gimpo~Busan route increased more than threefold from 290,000 to 920,000. The Gimpo~Yeosu and Gimpo~Gwangju routes also saw substantial growth compared to their first year of operation.
Meanwhile, Jeju Air is conducting promotions for inland routes and domestic flights departing from regional airports to revitalize regional airports and diversify domestic travel.
For inland routes such as Gimpo~Busan, Gwangju, Yeosu, and regional airport departures to Jeju such as Gunsan, Daegu, and Busan~Jeju, passengers who purchase tickets via the Jeju Air mobile app for travel by the end of this month will receive an immediate 5% discount, and those who agree to receive app messages will get a 7% discount.
