Chosun University Accelerates Creation of Gwangju eSports Industry Platform

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Chosun University is establishing and operating the ‘eSports Industry Support Center,’ part of the Gwangju Asia Culture Center City Development Project.

With Chosun University securing the nation’s largest eSports stadium, the establishment of the ‘eSports Industry Support Center’ is expected to lay the foundation for the development of eSports-related industries in the Honam region, including Gwangju.

By 2028, the eSports Industry Support Center, operated under consignment by Chosun University, aims to expand the base of eSports through private sector collaboration and international exchanges, establishing Gwangju as an Asian eSports hub city.

Through this project, Chosun University, as the executing institution, will receive 16.2 billion KRW in project funding over seven years starting from 2022. This will enable the university to play a leading role in the Asian eSports industry and secure differentiated management models through cooperation with domestic and international eSports organizations.

In particular, the plan is to activate the stadium through Asian eSports tournaments and forums, as well as club-specific championships, while creating a lifestyle-integrated eSports ecosystem through private sector linkages.

Additionally, domestic and international exchanges will be promoted through support projects for eSports professional teams based in Gwangju and the Honam region, development of eSports programs, the eSports national team training center, and friendly exchange tournaments with Gwangju Metropolitan City’s sister cities.

President Min Young-don stated, "With the nation’s largest eSports stadium and the eSports Education Center located in Gwangju, the establishment of the eSports Industry Support Center will generate various synergies," adding, "We will expand various programs to revitalize eSports, which is an official sport at the upcoming 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and an international sport."

He continued, "We will prepare related projects to utilize the eSports Industry Support Center as a platform in various ways within the eSports field."
