Samsung Electro-Mechanics Develops 13 Types of MLCCs for Automotive Powertrain


[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] Samsung Electro-Mechanics has developed high-temperature characteristic multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) applicable to automotive powertrains and is targeting the automotive electronics market.


On the 11th, Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced plans to supply 13 types of automotive MLCCs guaranteed for operating environments up to 150℃ to global automotive parts customers. High-reliability automotive MLCCs guaranteed for 150℃ have only been produced by a few overseas companies, but with this expansion of its automotive lineup, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has strengthened product competitiveness and laid the foundation for increasing market share.


The lineup includes various sizes and capacitances, ranging from a high-capacity 22uF (microfarad) product in the 3225 size (3.2mm width, 2.5mm length) to a compact 220nF (nanofarad) product in the 1608 size.


The powertrain is the core driving unit of a vehicle, such as the internal combustion engine or the electric motor in electric vehicles, and during the power transmission process, the internal operating temperature can rise up to 150℃, requiring high reliability for the components installed. The newly developed products meet the characteristics of normal operation without capacitance reduction even in harsh environments of 150℃. Due to the high technical difficulty in raw material development and manufacturing process technology, only a few overseas companies have been able to mass-produce these products, which have a high entry barrier. This achievement comes amid expectations that the automotive MLCC market will grow at an annual rate of about 9% due to vehicle electrification.


Kim Doo-young, Vice President and Head of the Component Business Division at Samsung Electro-Mechanics, said, “Automotive products used in extreme environments are more challenging than IT products, and among them, powertrain products are the most difficult,” adding, “Samsung Electro-Mechanics will differentiate materials and manufacturing processes through independent dielectric development and continue to expand market share in automotive MLCCs.”
