Seoul City Holds Citizen Idea Contest for the Future of 'Yeouido Park'... 20 Outstanding Citizen Proposals Selected Future Vision of Yeouido Park Ideas (Yeouidorok, Lee Yein)

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 11th that it received 118 submissions for the 'Yeouido Park Future Vision Citizen Idea Contest' and has finally selected 20 outstanding proposal ideas.

This contest was planned to gather creative and diverse opinions from citizens to transform Yeouido Park, the central space of Yeouido, into a world-class cultural park. This is in response to Yeouido's strengthened role as a hub for international finance, business, and MICE industries in the 2040 Seoul Plan, rapid changes in urban conditions such as the establishment of the GTX-B line and the redevelopment of the Yeouido apartment district.

A total of 190 participants, either individuals or teams, submitted 118 ideas. The contest period was from February 25 to March 25, attracting many participants including students, experts, and general citizens, resulting in a variety of ideas. The 118 ideas were categorized mainly as ▲ 'Future spatial concept of Yeouido Park' with 31 submissions ▲ 'Activation ideas by section of Yeouido Park' with 44 submissions ▲ 'Proposals for cultural events and programs in Yeouido Park' with 43 submissions. A total prize of 10 million KRW and the Seoul Mayor's Award will be given to the 20 winners.

Many ideas in this contest suggested that Yeouido Park should be utilized as a dynamic, citizen-centered space through various cultural facilities and spatial uses, rather than just a simple planting and resting area. Notable examples include the introduction of landmark cultural facilities within the park (such as an opera house), vertical three-dimensional spaces, and diverse experiential content.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to review the concepts of the 118 submitted ideas, including the 20 winning entries, and incorporate them into the basic plan for revitalizing Yeouido Park. Hong Seon-gi, head of the Seoul Public Development Planning Team, said, "This contest was a valuable opportunity to understand how Yeouido Park should change and what preparations are needed," adding, "The precious ideas from citizens who participated in the contest will be utilized in the policy planning for Yeouido Park."
