Prepared Local Council Workers for the Era of Decentralization
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] On the 11th, former Gwangju Buk-gu Council member Lee Jeongcheol declared his candidacy for the Gwangju Metropolitan Council in the 4th electoral district of Buk-gu (Yongbong, Samgak, Ilgok, Maegok-dong) at the Citizens Communication Room on the 1st floor of the Gwangju Metropolitan Council.
The prospective candidate Lee stated on the 10th, “Based on my long experience in local autonomy and four years of legislative activities, I will do my best to change the lives of citizens in the new constituency.”
Lee Jeongcheol, who served as a member of the 8th Gwangju Metropolitan Buk-gu Council, emphasized, “I filled the past four years with experiences of contemplating and solving many local issues together with residents,” and added, “I will be a city council member who works with the belief that all answers are always found on the ground (with the people).”
Prospective candidate Lee Jeongcheol is highly regarded for his social career and expertise as a venture entrepreneur, various resident autonomy activities such as serving as a resident autonomy committee member, and four years of legislative activities in the Buk-gu Council as his greatest assets.
He said, “By meeting each resident personally and learning, discussing, and practicing together with them, I realized once again how important these activities are for the realization of living autonomy,” emphasizing that he is a prepared worker who will work properly in the newly beginning era of decentralized autonomy.
Although the 6th electoral district of Buk-gu (Yangsan, Geon-guk, Sinyong-dong), which was the base of his legislative activities for the past four years, has been designated as a female competitive district, he said, “I positively accept the Democratic Party’s local election innovation to expand women’s political participation,” and added, “I will take the valuable experience of realizing living autonomy as an opportunity to demonstrate it on a new constituency and the larger stage of Gwangju,” which is also a notable point.
Prospective candidate Lee presented five major visions for realizing a better and happier Gwangju: ▶realization of local autonomy where residents are the owners ▶implementation of welfare policies for socially vulnerable groups ▶creation of an urban environment to improve residents’ quality of life ▶establishment of a people-centered city of culture and arts ▶construction of tourism infrastructure linked to local culture.
Meanwhile, prospective candidate Lee Jeongcheol served as chairman of the Administrative Autonomy Committee, and as a member of the Safety City Committee, Council Operation Committee, Special Budget and Settlement Committee, and Special Committee on Balanced Urban Development in the 8th Gwangju Metropolitan Buk-gu Council.
He has also received numerous awards recognizing his outstanding legislative activities, including the 2021 Local Council Manifesto Promise Award Excellence Prize and the 2022 Local Autonomy Society Excellence Award.
