Chosun University Establishes Domestic Bio-Health Industry Research Innovation Cluster

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Chosun University has been finally selected as the operating institution for the "Industry-Academia-Research Platform Cooperative Technology Development Project (New Industry Sector: Bio-Health)" organized by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and will promote the project until 2025.

The Industry-Academia-Research Platform Cooperative Technology Development Project selects universities and research institutions with technology, infrastructure, and personnel as platforms to promote innovative technology development for startups with innovative capabilities. Five universities and four research institutions were selected for this project.

Chosun University, the only university in the Honam region selected for the project, plans to establish a comprehensive support system for domestic bio-health companies, including preliminary diagnosis, consulting, R&D planning, cooperative R&D support, and commercialization, utilizing its pool of faculty members. Up to 320 million KRW will be supported per project for a maximum of 2 years and 4 months, with a total project budget of up to 6 billion KRW during the project period.

Chosun University, as the 2022 Industry-Academia-Research Cooperative Platform R&D (Research and Development) executing institution (General Manager: Choi Han-cheol, Director of Industry-Academia Cooperation Group), will discover candidate companies through a support company selection announcement from mid-April to early May, finalize companies that fit the optimal support type by the end of June, and plan to carry out R&D projects and non-R&D businesses concurrently from July.

In particular, about 70 institutions, including patent law firms, accelerators, technology commercialization organizations, TIPS operators, venture capital (VC) institutions, corporate support organizations, and government-funded research institutes, will cooperate to strengthen corporate capabilities and growth in this project.

Chosun University plans to provide support in connection with its owned or operated one-stop industry-academia cooperation support system, CoTech Office, industry-academia cooperation mentoring group, and 12 on-campus bio-health support organizations.

Additionally, since the only industry-academia-research-hospital cluster in Korea is established in the Gwangju area, cooperation with the K-BioHealth Regional Center, which will be actively promoted starting this year, will continue.

Through this, it is expected to foster innovation in the bio-health platform R&BD (business-linked technology development) and a research ecosystem hub, enhancing growth values such as job creation, quality of life improvement, and regional economic revitalization.

Choi Han-cheol, Director of the Industry-Academia Cooperation Group, said, "We will form a dedicated organization for supporting industry-academia cooperation platform R&D and establish a more systematic industry-academia-research-hospital cooperation system to continuously discover and support SMEs with innovative capabilities." He added, "We plan to comprehensively support and nurture companies through cooperation with on-campus infrastructure such as Chosun University Hospital and Dental Hospital, as well as bio-health related organizations inside and outside the region."
