Yoon Administration Appoints ‘Daejangdong Top Instructor’ Won Hee-ryong as First Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport

[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Tae-min] President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol appointed former Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong as the first Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the new government on the 10th.

The newly appointed Minister Won was born in 1964, graduated from Jeju Jeil High School, majored in law at Seoul National University, and completed a master's course in New Media at Hanyang University Graduate School of Media and Information.

He passed the 34th Judicial Examination and was commissioned as a prosecutor at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office in 1995, working at the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office, Yeoju Branch, and Busan District Prosecutors' Office. In 1999, he joined the Grand National Party and served as a member of the National Assembly for the 16th to 18th sessions, and was later elected Governor of Jeju Province in 2014.

During the presidential election, Won served as the head of the policy headquarters at President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol's campaign, overseeing the overall election policy pledges. He also served as the planning chairman of the Presidential Transition Committee. During the election process, he led the allegations regarding the Daejang-dong development scandal against former Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, earning the nickname "Daejang-dong Top Lecturer."

While serving as Governor of Jeju Province, he demanded a re-investigation from the Moon administration, citing errors in the official prices of apartment complexes. During the presidential primary, he proposed real estate pledges such as reverting capital gains tax, abolishing the three lease laws, and government joint investment of 50% for first-time homebuyers.
